Newlife™ recycled polyester fiber: how a plastic bottle becomes a running t-shirt

From recycling bin to technical yarn

A mineral water bottle tossed into the yellow recycling bin. A few months later, it might be accompanying a runner on a 10k. This shortcut is no mere slogan: it is the very principle of recycled polyester, the material found today in a large portion of technical running t-shirts, including those in the Spiridon Anthology collection.

Among the recycled yarns used in sportswear, one of the most recognized is Newlife™, a yarn developed in Italy from post-consumer PET bottles. It is the core material in our Anthology t-shirts and Summit tank tops. Here is how we go from plastic waste to a running garment.

From bottle to yarn: manufacturing steps

The process follows a chain that is simple to understand, even if each step requires a well-oiled industry:

  1. Collection and sorting of used PET bottles and packaging.
  2. Washing to remove labels, glues, and residues.
  3. Shredding into chips (plastic flakes).
  4. Melting the chips into polyester pellets.
  5. Spinning the pellets into continuous yarn, ready to be knitted.

The recycling used for Newlife™ is mechanical: the plastic is sorted, shredded, melted, and then spun, without any chemical dissolution step. The result is a yarn with quality comparable to virgin polyester. This is essential, because a running t-shirt does not forgive a fiber that pills or loses its properties after a few washes.

Recycled polyester vs. virgin polyester: what is the difference for the runner?

For a runner, a recycled textile is only useful if it fulfills the promises of a technical fabric: wicking away sweat, drying quickly, remaining lightweight, and resisting friction (bag straps, water bottle belt, armpits). Recycled polyester retains the same structure as petroleum-based polyester. It is knitted and treated in the same way, and therefore offers the same breathable qualities.

The Newlife™ yarn used in our pieces is Oeko-Tex® certified (free of substances harmful to the skin) and Global Recycled Standard certified (traceability of the recycled content). It is also certified antibacterial, anti-odor, UV-resistant, and supports thermoregulation: all properties that matter when you are hitting the road regularly.

Spiridon uses other recycled fibers in its range, such as the Q-Nova® in our socks, made from recycled polyamide waste.

A measurable environmental impact

Transforming plastic into textile yarn is not without impact, but the difference compared to virgin polyester production is clear. According to data provided by the manufacturer of Newlife™ yarn, producing this recycled yarn saves up to approximately 94% of water and 60% of energy, and reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 32% compared to virgin polyester. These figures vary according to calculation methods, but they provide a clear order of magnitude.

We must also remain clear-eyed: a recycled garment is still a garment. The most ecological gesture is to wear it for a long time. That is why the quality of the yarn and the tailoring counts as much as the origin of the material.

At Spiridon: a 100% European circuit

Our recycled fiber pieces are 100% Made in Europe, from the origin of the yarn to the final tailoring, including the knitting. Our technical t-shirts are made in Portugal by Pétratex, a benchmark workshop for sportswear.

You will find Newlife™ yarn in several pieces in the range:

These are pieces designed for training and competition. Their raw material simply had a first life: that of a water bottle.

How to care for recycled fiber textiles

A recycled fiber is cared for just like any other technical running material: wash cold or at 30°C, no fabric softener (it clogs the fibers and reduces breathability), air dry rather than tumble dry. For more information, our running clothing care guide details the right habits to make your technical textiles last, recycled or not.

Next time you put on your t-shirt before a workout, think about it: in a previous life, it may have quenched someone's thirst.
